Arthur James "The Bulldog" Donovan, Jr. was an American football defensive tackle, better known as Art Donovan, who played for three National Football League teams, most notably the Baltimore Colts. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968. He was easily recognized due to the crew cut he sported.
Art Donovan, son of Arthur Donovan, Sr., a famed boxing referee, and the grandson of Professor Mike Donovan, the world middle weight boxing champion in the 1870s.
Art attended Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx. He received a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame in 1942 but left after one semester to join the United States Marine Corps, where he spent four years during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre and took part in some of the conflict's fiercest engagements, such as the Battle of Luzon and the Battle of Iwo Jima. His earned citations, which included the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal, and would later earn him a place in the U.S. Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame, the first pro football player so honored. After the war, he completed his college career at Boston College.
He is a Professional football player. Defensive tackle with NFL's Baltimore Colts (1950; 1953-1961) New York Yanks (1952), and Dallas Texans (1952).
During his 12 years of playing professional football, he was named Outstanding Defensive Tackle. Art Played in five all-pro games plus the World Championships in 1958 and 1959.
The Colts retired his uniform number '70' after he himself retired from pro-football (1962).
In1967,He was the first Baltimore Colt to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame . and Inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1970.
