Faruk Abu-Chacra Fouad: the pulse of Lebanon stopped after his assassination on September 12. 1983. I was a good friend of many who were of a different political view from my own. Fouad was one of them. He was a talented ideologist and open for discussion, but we were bad listeners; everything that he said was right and we were wrong. He was right about the threats against our country and we were wrong to ignore him. In all his warnings about what would happen to our Lebanon, he was right and we were wrong. Unfortunately, it is only now, as we follow events in our treasured homeland, do we fully appreciate his wisdom and have to live today the unhappy consequences of ignoring his foresight. Fouad and I were personal friends before I left Lebanon in 1959. He was even then an intellectual and cosmopolitan. Lebanon would have been so much different today if these patriotic friends had not have been murdered. Our dear country would have continued to be the pearl of the Middle East and an example to the rest of the world. God bless him and all the other martyrs who gave themselves for the rest of us. Faruk Abu-Chacra I should like to express my sincere condolences on this anniversary of the horrible assassination of the close friend of my youth friend Fouad Abi Najm, and 26 others including the new elected president of Lebanon, Bachir Jumaiel. This tragedy event occured on the 14th of September 1982 when a bomb exploded in the Beirut Phalange headquarters. My friend Fouad Abi Najm has remained in my mind from the time I left Lebanon in 1959. Although we had quite different political views, but his charisma, sympathy and powers of reasonable argumentation made me and others respect him and his ‘Party Pin’ which he always carried on his left chest. The incident was a disaster and a great loss not only for the victims’ families but also for the whole country of our beloved Lebanon. I repeat my sincere condolences to all of their family members and God bless them all.
